Catherine Deneuve Calls The #MeToo Movement A ‘Witch Hunt’, Signs Open Letter To Defend Men’s Rights!

French actress Catherine Deneuve is stirring up some controversy with her thoughts on the #MeToo movement founded in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein accusations!

In an open letter along with 100 women also in the industry in France, the Belle du Jour star calls the anti-sexual harassment campaign a “witch hunt” against men. Published in the French magazine Le Monde, they claim it’s created a “totalitarian” climate which actually undermines sexual freedom.

Implying the sexual harassers are actually victims, the letter takes issue with “men who are sanctioned in their work, pushed to resign, etc., when their only wrongdoing was to touch a knee, try to steal a kiss, speak about intimate things during a professional dinner or send messages that are sexually loaded to a woman who wasn’t attracted to them.”

The translation of the letter continued:

“Rape is a crime. But flirting with insistently or clumsily isn’t a crime, and chivalry is not a machismo aggression.”

The letter further claimed the movement is adding to a “puritanical” environment, saying men should be “free to hit on” women:

“What began as freeing women up to speak has today turned into the opposite ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ we intimidate people into speaking ‘correctly,’ shout down those who don’t fall into line, and those women who refused to bend [to the new realities] are regarded as complicit and traitors.”

Weinstein rape accuser Asia Argento has taken issue publicly with the letter signed by Catherine and also author Catherine Millet.

The actress wrote on Twitter Tuesday:

Sadly, it’s an unsurprising opinion from Catherine, who previously shared a controversial sentiment about France’s version of the movement, #balancetonporc:

“I don’t think it is the right method to change things, it is excessive. After ‘calling out your pig,’ what are we going to have, ‘call out your whore’?”

Sigh.

This is just sad all around.
