Serena Williams Says Childbirth Made Her ‘Stronger’ After Opening Up About Scary Complications!

Serena Williams gets real about women's health issues!

Just a few days ago, Serena Williams opened up about giving birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia to reveal she suffered from a group of scary health complications in the days following the emergency c-section.

On Monday, the tennis superstar took to Facebook to thank followers for also sharing their stories about the reality of childbirth, while also uploading a sweet video of hers and Alexis Ohanian‘s little one.

She shared in the post:

“I didn’t expect that sharing our family’s story of Olympia’s birth and all of complications after giving birth would start such an outpouring of discussion from women ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ especially black women ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ who have faced similar complications and women whose problems go unaddressed. These aren’t just stories: according to the CDC, (Center for Disease Control) black women are over 3 times more likely than White women to die from pregnancy- or childbirth-related causes. We have a lot of work to do as a nation and I hope my story can inspire a conversation that gets us to close this gap.”

But she continued, saying she hopes all women can have a healthy journey to motherhood:

“Let me be clear: EVERY mother, regardless of race, or background deserves to have a healthy pregnancy and childbirth. I personally want all women of all colors to have the best experience they can have. My personal experience was not great but it was MY experience and I’m happy it happened to me. It made me stronger and it made me appreciate women — both women with and without kids — even more. We are powerful!!!”

Serena overcame so much as she battled a pulmonary embolism after giving birth on top of recovering from a large hematoma, which had flooded her abdomen.

She has such a positive outlook, and we can only imagine how she’s inspiring other women who have faced similar struggles!
