Rosario Dawson has stood beside the victims of sexual assault and harassment since the beginning of the #MeToo movement.

Now, the Rent star is opening up about her own experiences with abuse, which occurred long before her days in the entertainment industry: she was raped and molested as a child.

Speaking on the feminist podcast Morado on January 17, the 38-year-old hinted that her abuser was a member of her family, and admitted the experience shaped her entire outlook on life.

She explained to hosts Cindy Rodriguez and Nathalie Farfan:

“I was raped and molested as a child, so for me, the world was like that since I was a child. So when I saw it in the workplace, it wasn’t foreign to me. It was like, well, that even happens within the family. It happens with people that are supposed to take care of you when you’re a child.”

Now standing on the forefront of the Time’s Up movement, Dawson said she sees the dawn of a “beautiful” new day ahead, one where future generations don’t have to put up with the same abusive treatment:

“Now we’re in a place where it’s finally like, ├óΓé¼╦£No, we don’t have to keep passing this on. This is archaic and terrible and destructive. Let’s look at it.’ ├óΓé¼┬ª It’s beautiful. I’m so ready for this moment.”

Us too!

The Defenders actress went on to praise all the individuals coming forward with their stories and affecting change. We’d like to take this opportunity to praise Rosario for doing the same!
