When two women got the chance to meet Richard Dreyfuss, they ended up with a close encounter of the inappropriate kind.
After seeing the actor in the 2004 Broadway production of Sly Fox, two Long Island friends were invited to visit Dreyfuss backstage, where he allegedly touched one’s breasts and “grabbed” the other on the ass!
The NY Daily News published a series of photos of the encounter that shows the Close Encounters of the Third Kind star’s squeezing one of the women on her buttock, then wrapping his arms around her waist with his fingers lingering on her breasts and above her crotch.
The 48-year-old woman, who asked to be identified only by her first name, Beth, remembered of the incident:
“The first thing he did was give me a hug, and he stuck his hand almost in the crack of my butt. He didn’t even give me any warning. Then he turned me around, and he grabbed me by the boob. And he grabbed right above my private area, lower than my midriff. Like he was tickling me. I was giggling, but not in a happy way. I was so nervous├óΓé¼┬ª I was so uncomfortable. It was such a weird, awkward feeling.”
Susan, the second woman, said the actor caught her off guard with a kiss on the cheek — something she did not consent to. The 52-year-old recalled:
“He kissed me without permission. I’m smiling in the photo, but it was a nervous smile. I didn’t know how to react. I was so surprised… I just remember it was creepy, weird and awkward. We were excited to go in there and meet him, and it wasn’t what we expected. It was a shock. I was surprised, I didn’t expect him to be that type of person. He was on both of us.”
Not only was Dreyfuss’ handsy-ness unexpected; the entire introduction was as well.
Both women recounted being approached by someone at the Manhattan theater who offered to take them backstage and introduce them to Dryefuss. But right after meeting the sweaty star, Beth and Susan were instantly “grossed out” by his energy. Beth said:
“I remember he was sweaty and talking fast. I couldn’t understand why he was being so touchy with people he’d never met before. And he was saying really weird, awkward stuff. He told me I had nice lips. Susan was really grossed out.”
Beth recalled Dreyfuss asking them to stay and hang out with him, but they “made some excuse and left.” She continued:
“He acted like it was completely normal. I just remember the whole time, I just wanted to get out of there. He didn’t seem to care one drop about us. He didn’t ask us anything about ourselves. We could have been anyone.”
Sounds like he wasn’t being much of a sly fox about wanting to party.
After the ladies left, they compared notes about the disturbing interaction and started spreading the word. Beth’s friend, a TV producer, said she first reported the incident to him within a couple months in 2004, telling The Daily News:
“She told me Richard Dreyfuss was inappropriate with her ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ his hands were all over her. I just remember her showing me the pictures and telling me how Richard Dreyfuss was kind of pervy with her. I would say she was shocked by his behavior.”
After holding on to the story for years, Beth said the final straw was in November when Dreyfuss denied whipping his dick out at writer Jessica Teich back in 1987.
Now inspired by the #MeToo movement, Beth finally decided to come forward with her story — and the pictures that backed it up. Head over to the The Daily News to see the incriminating photos.
