This is straight up terrifying.
Passengers on a United Airlines flight from California to Hawaii were given quite the fright when parts of their plane began to fall off mid-flight. Eek!!!
Thankfully, the aircraft was able to make an emergency landing in Honolulu before anything too disastrous occurred. Still, many on the flight were hit with anxiety, as they watched as their plane slowly fell apart. Thus, we don’t blame them for documenting the technical scare on Twitter.
Although this scenario could’ve turned into an IRL Lost situation, passenger Maria Falashchi indicated that the crew had control of the situation. She added:
It was about 45 minutes until we landed. Heard a big bang and the plane started to shake violently. The pilots and crew did a great job at keeping us updated.

Good to know. As for United, they’ve since released the following on the in-flight hiccup:
“United flight 1175 traveling to Honolulu from San Francisco landed safely after the pilots called for an emergency landing because of an issue with the #2 engine. Our pilots followed all necessary protocols to safely land the aircraft.”
After landing, the plane was met by emergency service vehicles. Currently, it’s believed that the cowling (AKA the covering over an airplane’s engine) loosened during the flight and fell off.
The airline also noted that they’re “fully cooperating” with the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration, who are both investigating the matter.
