Donald Glover is perfectly aware of his MANY talents.
In fact, the Atlanta creator has had his hands in so many different projects, that it’s safe to call him one of Hollywood’s top content creators. Thus, it isn’t surprising to learn that in his recent New Yorker interview, the 34-year-old exposed Chris Rock as a fan AND compared himself to Jesus.
We’re being completely serious. While discussing his critically acclaimed dramedy, Donald revealed that Rock praised his TV hit, even noting that they wouldn’t have let him make a show like Atlanta “back in the day.” Despite believing he’s “a little better than Chris,” Glover claims watching Rock’s career helped his own.
“I’m a little better than Chris, because I had Chris to study. And now I am actively looking for the black female to replace me.”
While, to some, that may seem like a bold thing to say, there is no denying that Glover is a quadruple threat. On top of a successful comedy career, Glover has walked away with numerous Grammy nominations for his work as Childish Gambino. When asked if he’s bad at “anything,” the Golden Globe winner replied:
“To be honest, no. Probably just people. People don’t like to be studied, or bested. I’m fine with it. I don’t really like people that much. People accept me now because I have power, but they still think, Oh, he thinks he’s the golden flower of the black community, thinks he’s so different. But I am, though! I feel like Jesus. I do feel chosen. My struggle is to use my humanity to create a classic work├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥but I don’t know if humanity is worth it, or if we’re going to make it. I don’t know if there’s much time left.”
Being humble is so overrated. Embrace your superstardom, bro!
Not to mention, with the way Tinseltown works, if Donald isn’t advocating for himself — it’s likely that no one will. Amid discussing his role as a black role model, Donald highlighted the difficulties of being an artist of color:
“I went to school with white people who had less talent than me├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥because I’m talented as fuck├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥and they’re doing way better than me. I went to N.Y.U. with Lady Gaga.”
Snap! Snap! Glover continued:
“Now, CBS ran Grammys ads this week, and I’m one of the hotter acts, and they had a visual of the performers on the show: Lady Gaga, Pink, and me. Only they showed some black kid from a fan video├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥it’s not even me. I was, like, Fuck this, fuck them, I’m not going to do the show! The sad thing is I’m going to do it, because black people don’t get that chance very often.”
Man, oh man. Regardless, we think it’s inspiring how unapologetic Donald is about his raw, natural abilities.
