Finally Donald Trump is doing something about Russia!
Trump’s Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced on Thursday they will finally enact sanctions on Russian agents (a month and a half after the Congressional deadline btw) for their “attempted interference in US elections, destructive cyber-attacks, and intrusions targeting critical infrastructure.”
Five entities and 19 individuals will be barred from traveling in the U.S. and have all their stateside assets frozen, which should stop them from being about to continue their actions.
Those sanctioned include the troll farm known as the Internet Research Agency, which spread divisive rhetoric mostly in Trump’s favor during the election, and one of its financial backers, Yevgeniy Viktorovich Prigozhin — a friend of Putin.
If any of that sounds familiar, it’s probably because it’s the same people Robert Mueller indicted a few weeks ago — along with 13 others also named in today’s sanctions — as part of the investigation Trump keeps calling an all-caps “WITCH HUNT!” and has tried multiple times to end.
Oh BTW, this is not even close to the list of names for possible sanctions Treasury released back in January, which was apparently just a cut-and-paste job of Forbes‘ list of Russian billionaires. No, this is much closer to Mueller’s indictments. Which leads to the question — would this have gotten done at all without the Mueller probe???
But there’s more we didn’t know…
According to these sanctions, the Russians didn’t just attack our elections — they attempted to hack the U.S. energy grid!
If they succeed in such an attack, not only could they knock out your power for potentially weeks — imagine that! — it would also cost thousands of American lives in hospitals without access to electricity.
In all this may have been the biggest cyber attack in history, costing billions in damage to the U.S. and across Europe.
Getting the picture now, Trump? RUSSIA IS NOT OUR FRIEND!
Sanctions aren’t just important as punishment, they actually make it far more difficult for these attacks to take place. That’s why Congress agreed to them with an overwhelming majority last year.
Why Trump delayed so long is anyone’s guess…
Anyone at all.
Mueller? Mueller? Mueller?
