As you surely know, the former Disney darling stars as Jughead Jones in The CW‘s young adult drama. And, while the character Jughead has made strides in working on his social anxiety, it seems that the 25-year-old channels his own experiences with anxiety to portray the angsty high schooler.
On the recent development that Jones would run for class president on Riverdale, Sprouse shared with Us Weekly:
“It was kind of a big character moment for Jughead because it’s him saying, ├óΓé¼╦£I’m no longer afraid of a public platform. How do you feel about me doing something like this? Will you help me with this?’ He’s a kid in season one that had a ton of social anxiety and is figuring out how to navigate through that. Announcing he wants to be president is kind of big for his anxiety.”
Cole certainly has experience living life in the spotlight. As you may recall, Cole has been working since he was a youngster, as he landed roles in projects like Friends, Big Daddy, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, etc. It wasn’t until he headed to NYU for college in 2011 that he took a break from the limelight.
During this time, Cole was able to come to terms with his own anxiety struggles. He continued:
“I had some pretty bad social anxiety when I was little just because I was raised in celebrity culture, and feeling watched all the time. And at least for me ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ and I can only really speak from personal experiences ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ I didn’t really get over it until I sort of put my hand into the fire and said, ├óΓé¼╦£OK, this is something I’ve got to live with. Let’s deal with it.’
I went to New York, I lived in the city, I was in one of the most populated places on Earth and just kind of embraced who I was, how people viewed me and how I navigate other people. I think at some point I asked myself, ├óΓé¼╦£Do I ignore the pink elephant, or do I address that it’s there and just continue to live my life?’ And I think Jughead’s doing that as well.”
We’re glad Cole has been able to channel these experiences into his work, because he’s REALLY killing it on Riverdale. Thank you for sharing, man.
