Teen Mom OG‘s Amber Portwood Reveals The Hard Decision To Go Back On Antidepressants During Pregnancy

For some moms, pregnancy is a joy. For Amber Portwood, it’s a dangerous tightrope.

The Teen Mom OG star didn’t think she could even have kids again because she was worried her mental health medications would “mess up the fetus.”

So when she decided she really wanted a child with new man Andrew Glennon, she stopped all the drugs.

But that led to other concerns for Amber, who had previously been diagnosed with borderline personality and bipolar disorders.

And pregnancy posed the risk of causing another mental health condition — postpartum depression. She told People:

“I had a concern with my depression when I went in and talked to my doctor, and it was a concern that postpartum was something that could happen because of how I’m doing right now.”

So Amber, with the blessing of Andrew, made the tough call:

“I thought I was able to control it myself, so I just wanted to try it out and see if I could. I realized ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ I think I was about seven months pregnant ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ that I needed something for depression.”

Thankfully, she got the OK from a doctor as well:

“We were really against taking any medication during the pregnancy but the doctor told me about one certain prescription that was okay for pregnancy and there were no effects on the baby or anything, so I ended up taking an antidepressant.”

Amber says she immediately had “a lot more energy” and felt “a lot happier” — and that’s something that’s obviously healthier for her and her child.

“I kind of just want to nip it in the bud before anything gets too bad or you go into a really deep depression, which is not good for me right now, obviously. I’m 33 weeks pregnant. It’s just something you have to do to make yourself feel better, and you have to make sure it’s safe for the baby and just move forward from that.”

We can barely believe this is the same Amber. She’s grown up so much!
