It’s typical for a president to give pardons and commutations during their terms in office.
But this current pardon is a bit….odd.
George W. Bush commuted the sentence of a former producer for the Fugees, John Forte, who had spent seven years in prison for cocaine possession with the intent to distribute.
So, now, Forte will soon be freed. He’ll only serve a bit more than half of his original 14 year sentence.
Who knew Bush was such a Fugees fan?!
Forte produced and co-wrote two songs on the Fugee’s album The Score back from 1996. He was arrested back in 2000 and found guilty of possession of 31 pounds of liquid cocaine to distribute.
And aside from Forte, on Monday night Bush also commuted another man for a cocaine offense and granted 14 pardons.
The president and founder of the advocacy group Families Against Mandatory Minimums supported Bush’s decision to commute the sentences of Forte and the other man who had been imprisoned for 15 years.
Apparently the group thinks that sentences for many “low-level, first-time, nonviolent drug offenders” don’t fit the crime many times.
