Twitter users are PISSED at Chrissy Teigen.
On Monday, the model took to the status-sharing site to make a characteristically random, quirky post about food, but this one seemed to backfire.

The gorgeous gal decided to comment on the fact that her salad dressing was labeled “oriental” rather than “Asian,” writing that it threw her off:
I really really really really clearly am not a PC type of gal but I’m a little weirded out at the oriental dressing option on my flight
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
Like if you’re over 50 you can call me oriental to my face but this is a new menu and I’m not a rug
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
But when a fan asked if the beauty felt the term to be offensive, Miz Teigen clarified that she did not:
Not offensive, really. Just weird. Old school. Just say Asian. https://t.co/yXOhPfwCJ6
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
That’s when the gorgeous gal got BOMBARDED by followers arguing that the term is offensive. The momma-of-one attempted to clap back at her critics, and you can see some of the back-and-forth (below):
@chrissyteigen impact > intention
— ayman / أيمن (@solastalgic) September 13, 2016
But them saying “oriental” makes no impact on me. I know that, most of the time, their intention is not to hurt https://t.co/N8DWqMmxhP
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
@chrissyteigen but it needs to be known that calling we of Asian descent ‘oriental’ is incredibly inappropriate; intent to hurt or not
— Ash (@Tomomi_Bitches) September 13, 2016
It’s not a slur, though. It’s just a bit of forgivable ignorance. https://t.co/SGFEPLvwrQ
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
For instance, you can call my mother Siamese. Thailand was Siam. But yeah. A little weird now.
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
@acephotomusings @chrissyteigen I take it as a slur now. At some point it was ‘socially acceptable’ but it’s been clarified now as a slur
— Ash (@Tomomi_Bitches) September 13, 2016
I disagree that it is a slur. But I’m not positive why, honestly. It just does not offend me. https://t.co/gRfSJlizDK
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
@Tomomi_Bitches nowwww it is used for inanimate objects. But why is that okay then? Who made that rule?
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
@Tomomi_Bitches I’ve never come across anyone who used it as a slur. Maybe when paired with an adjective, yes.
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
@marisaaquinoxo @Tomomi_Bitches chink is a slur to me. Oriental is not. It means east. East of Europe. It generalizes, but not a slur.
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
@rui_xu but does it offend? it isn’t malicious. it is ignorance.
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
At one point, the TV personality tried to sarcastically appease her haters:
Ok ok. You talked me into it. I’m offended.
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
But she quickly maintained that she isn’t offended by the word:
I honestly hear you but I disagree. If someone called me oriental, I would not be offended. At most, I would sigh. https://t.co/VtzcdvQ0Bu
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
Ignorance without malice isn’t something I can be offended by.
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
I really appreciate all the non-Asians telling me what is offensive to Asians, though. Thank you. Writing it all down.
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
It didn’t take long for Chrissy to get incredibly fed up with the backlash:
I think we all get that you aren’t offended @chrissyteigen. But you don’t seem to get that it is offensive to most. @trillhauz @schubie71
— Heidi (@HeidiHeidigger) September 13, 2016
I dunno where you see it’s offensive to most. It is ignorant to most, for sure. https://t.co/vNjkElvPDb
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
@chrissyteigen a lot of my relatives’ racism is not w bad intent. Still harmful. Just admit you learned something new today and move on?
— Kristine A (@_Kristine_A) September 13, 2016
Tell me, Kristine, what I should have learned? That u are offended I am not offended by a word you have no stake in? https://t.co/ujbNhYyZds
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
@chrissyteigen I don’t like being called Oriental.. But what gives.
— Sara (@SaraVtt) September 13, 2016
ME NEITHER. I am just saying I 👏🏽 am 👏🏽 not 👏🏽 offended 👏🏽 with 👏🏽 the 👏🏽 word https://t.co/JhfoS1qKZy
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
@chrissyteigen you never really represented Asian women or talked about any of our issues for you to have an opinion…
— urja (@goddessUrja) September 13, 2016
Is this a joke? Do you live with me or am I just a Twitter character to you? https://t.co/KGLpy5Eh4L
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
Just a heads up that this all began from me preferring my salad dressing not being called “oriental”
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
I think our miscommunication here is the fact we have different definitions of the word “offensive”.
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
Do I think saying “oriental” is inappropriate? Yes. Laughable and ignorant. Am I OFFENDED when I hear it? No.
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) September 13, 2016
