Lea Michele Broke The News Of Cory Monteith's Death To His Mom: 'She Was Screaming On The Phone'

No one was more affected by Cory Monteith‘s death than his own mother.
Ann McGregor can still recall the moment she found out that her son had died of a heroin overdose in 2013 — news she says was given to her over the phone by his girlfriend and Glee costar Lea Michele.

Speaking to People, she remembered:

“I got a call from Lea and she was screaming on the phone. She was yelling, ‘Is it true, is it true about Cory?’ and I said, ‘What about Cory?’ I had heard nothing. And then police knocked on my front door.”

McGregor said she “went into a state of numbness” after hearing the news, adding:

“I just shut off all emotions, and I was numb.”

Even as the weeks went by, she was still in denial over the tragic loss of her 31-year-old son:

“I knew it was real, but there were times when I could lie to myself and say, ‘He’s in L.A., he’ll call me soon.’ I’m still always hanging on edge. When you lose someone who is such a big part of you, you lose all purpose for living.”

As you likely know, Monteith’s body was found in a Vancouver hotel room with traces of morphine, codeine, and heroin present.

But just prior to his death, the actor was looking forward to a bright future outside of Hollywood.
McGregor revealed that her son had made plans to move into an apartment in Vancouver once his contract was up with Glee. He was even talked about having a family:

“Cory wanted a wife and kids. He would have made a beautiful father. He had accomplished so much. He was ready to step out of Hollywood and really live. He had so much to look forward to… Cory didn’t want to die. There is no doubt about that. But he’s carried in people’s hearts forever.”

A tragedy his life ended so soon.
