This is so, so heartbreaking.
A 3-year-old girl was reportedly found wandering around alone through a Waterbury, Connecticut, neighborhood in the middle of the morning one day this past week, leading police to make a devastating discovery inside her home, according to the CT Post.
Authorities said the little girl showed no “signs of abuse or neglect” when she was first found by cops after it was reported to law enforcement by a concerned neighbor, as told by the outlet.
But when officers finally located her mother, the 34-year-old woman was found unresponsive inside the residence. Emergency responders showed up, and sadly, they pronounced her dead at the scene.

According to Waterbury Police Sgt. Joseph Morais, the woman “showed signs of being deceased for a period of time,” the news outlet reported.

There were reportedly no obvious signs of foul play, according to WFSB News and NBC Connecticut. However, a cause of death has not been revealed yet. Neither the mother nor the little girl have been publicly identified, either.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
In the meantime, what a terribly sad situation. A small child wandering outside alone ultimately led authorities to a mother who had already been gone for some time. Ugh.
There are still many unanswered questions, and hopefully the ongoing investigation will provide answers for everyone affected.
