Chicago Bears Football Legend Mike Ditka Dead At 86

The football world is mourning a true icon.

Mike Ditka, the Pro Football Hall of Famer who helped make the Chicago Bears a legendary NFL powerhouse, has died at 86.

According to a statement released by his family Friday morning, the beloved athlete and coach leaves behind a legacy that goes far beyond the football field.

Per TMZ and others, they wrote:

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Mike Ditka.”

The family also reflected on the man behind the larger-than-life public persona, adding:

“While the world knew Mike as a Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl XX championship team, we knew him as the heart of our family.”

They concluded:

“Mike will be missed beyond measure and remembered forever.”

As reported by TMZ, the cause of death has not been disclosed. Ditka had faced some serious health challenges over the years, including a stroke in 2012 and a major heart attack in 2018.

His accomplishments on the gridiron were extraordinary, tho. Ditka played tight end at an elite level from 1961 to 1972 before making his mark as a head coach. He famously led the Bears to victory in Super Bowl XX in 1986, following their dominant 1985 season, and earned his place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988.

But Ditka’s fame extended well beyond football, as well. From commercials to his memorable and unforgettable connection with Saturday Night Live‘s beloved “Da Bears” sketches, he became a recognizable figure in American pop culture. He even made an appearance in the recurring comedy bit himself.

Now, Ditka is survived by his four children, three sons and one daughter, along with the family and fans who will continue to celebrate his remarkable life.

Rest in peace, Mike.

His impact on football — and Chicago — will never be forgotten…
