Pussy Riot may not be free, but they are bought.
HBO has purchased Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer after its Sundance premiere.
The filmmakers couldn’t be happier- putting their film on HBO can often mean the most eyes possible for a documentary.
And it means a lot to them that people see the girls’ side of the story. Co-director Maxim Pozdorovkin says:
“The film features footage from their trial, so you see how Pussy Riot turn it into a sort of performance. The girls really flourish and take on this role that’s thrust on them.
In the seventies, Russia didn’t have a punk movement, so Pussy Riot is like ‘God Save The Queen’ for them.”
Co-director Mike Lerner really wants you to care about the girls. He says:
“We also interviewed their families and lawyers. And we have candid footage of the girls chatting privately right before the trial.
We want to show what Masha, Nadia and Katia are like as individuals – why they did what they did, and how they’ve responded since.”
It sounds like the film will be taking an incredibly intimate look at the iconic tale. Sounds interesting even without the reality!
But the fact that two girls are still in prison makes this doc a truly important watch!
