Gross.

Or maybe not. Due to water shortages, areas (including Orange County) have resorted to purifying sewage (containing human waste), into drinking water.

Phoenix is another example of a city that due to their lack of proximity to a fresh water source will begin to rely more and more on treated sewage (most of their water comes from Lake Mead, which is 230 miles away).

Fortunately, there’s an upside: The treated sewage water is actually purer than most tap water.

“Some people think it’s piping sewage straight to your tap,” says Jason Dadakis, director of health and regulatory affairs for the Orange County Water District. “But it’s a little more complex than that. We’re using an advanced purification technique that provides the best quality available for replenishing Orange County’s groundwater base.”

While the thought of drinking sewage water sounds worse than death, it’s something that we can get over knowing that it goes through such an elaborate treatment process.

Yay, sewage!
