Good news!
More Americans are beating cancer!
According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Cancer Institute, the number of cancer survivors in the U.S. has increased to 11.7 million!
Compared to 3 million cancer survivors in 1971 and 9.8 million in 2001, that’s pretty darn good news!
In the study, a cancer survivor was defined as anyone who has had cancer, from the time of diagnosis through the balance of his or her life, who were alive on Jan. 1, 2007.
Researchers believe the increase in the number of cancer survivors is due to a growing aging population, early detection, improved diagnostic methods, more effective treatment, and improved clinical follow-up after treatment.
We hope this hopeful statistic continues to rise as we advance our understanding of the disease and continue to develop ways to fight it.
