Ugh! Such a shame that a professional sports team has had to stoop to this level to sell tickets.
A women’s soccer team in Russia is ditching their jerseys for bikinis in an attempt to draw more “fans” to their games, which are seriously lacking in ticket sales.
The sad thing is, the team is GOOD!
WFC Rossiyanka, based in Krasnoarmeysk near Moscow, has won the Russian women’s top-tier soccer league three times in 2005, 2006 and 2010. The team has also played in the women’s UEFA Champions League in the past two seasons.
The team’s coach (who is a female by the way) commented on the decision to put her players in bikinis, saying:
“We are the best woman’s team in Russia and have won many championships, even representing our country in the UEFA Champions League. But few people have ever heard of us, and we don’t get many people coming to games. So we’ve decided to give our profile a boost by appearing in bikinis.”
We hate to break it to these ladies, but we think any fans buying tickets for this publicity stunt are probably coming for the WRONG reasons.
We’re sure the entire team looks FANTASTIC in a bikini, but there is a certain level of integrity that shouldn’t be compromised in professional sports.
As much as we’d LOVE to see David Beckham play soccer in his underwear, we hope the LA Galaxy would never allow that even if ticket sales dropped dramatically.
There has to be other ways of putting more butts in the bleachers — giveaways, contests, celebrity appearances, etc. — and we hope this team figures it out soon so they can continue to be a force to be reckoned with in their league.
