Advice From Dr. Karen: Heartbreak In The Same House

Dr. Karen Heartbreak

Dr. Karen, we hope you can help this heartbroken young man!

Dear Dr. Karen,

I am completely heartbroken. My girlfriend of 3 years broke up with me and is now dating my fraternity brother, and to make matters worse, we both live in the fraternity house. We met in high school and I thought she was “the one.” She said she thought we have grown apart over the last year of college but I really didn’t feel that. I feel so betrayed and mad at both of them and they both act like we can all be friends. Do you have any advice on how to heal my heart and to get over losing my girl? Justin, 23, Studio City, CA

Hello Justin,

It sounds like you are really dealing with a difficult situation. Any break up can be very painful but to have your ex now dating someone that you know AND live with takes that pain to a different level. First of all, it would be best for you to spend as little amount of time with your frat brother as possible and no time with your ex. You are hurt and angry and don’t need to have their new relationship around you. If you do want to “be friends” with her, you have to let her go, heal yourself, then establish a new relationship with her. You are in a good position in your life to move on, make new friends and meet new girls at your school and social activities.

Sounds like great advice, Dr. Karen!

And we agree — it’s a pretty shitty situation they’ve put you in, especially if they just assume you can be friends with them. You need to take the time to figure out what decision you want to make about that without letting them choose for you!

You’ll find someone new. Someone who won’t do that to you. That’s some cold shizz, Justin!

Good luck!
