We mean his Beats brand headphones, not like he started playing one of his songs during an event or something. LOLz!
Olympic sponsors pay biiiig bucks to have their products featured.
And the International Olympic Committee (IOC) actually specifically tries to keep any competing products completely out of the Olympics.
Well Dr. Dre sent some Beats headphones with the Union Jack logo on them to several athletes on Team GB and those athletes wore those headphones on TV.
So Dre got his beats on TV during the Olympics! A victory for him and an act that angered the IOC.
Another related issue is Rule 40, a strict regulation that keeps Olympic athletes from promoting their regular sponsors on social media if their sponsor isn’t an official London 2012 sponsor.
Athletes have taken to Twitter demanding change.
A U.S. hurdler tweeted:
“I am honored to be an Olympian but #wedemandchange #rule40@NBCOlympics”
An IOC spokesman said in response:
“Those athletes lucky enough to have a high-profile sponsor can work with them throughout the four years. They have only one month where they can’t do that.”
The problem is many athletes struggle to stay in the sport and their sponsorships are the only thing keeping them able to do what they do.
Down with Rule 40!
