And that’s why we love Kate Winslet.
The celeb mum cares more about her kids and being a mom than about being the most famous Hollywood actress.
The funny thing is that she’s managed to be one of the most successful actresses while also being an amazing mother to her two children, as well as being an advocate for children around the world.
The Academy Award winning actress is on a mission to improve the lives of kids with autism and giving parents hope.
She has a new book called The Golden Hat: Talking Back to Autism, which includes a series of celeb portraits wearing a trilby hat and saying whatever comes to their mind while wearing the hat.
All proceeds from the book go to Kate’s charity, The Golden Hat Foundation, which focuses on children with autism and aims to find ways to help their parents.
In the latest issue of Ladies Home Journal, Kate talks about how charity has impacted her life:
“Well my father is disabled├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥he lost his foot in an accident when I was young. It was awful, it caused all sorts of problems, both physically and psychologically├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥and for awhile my family was supported by a charitable trust. So I understand on a very personal level what a charitable organization can do.”
How she’s teaching her kids to give back:
“They get a little allowance every week and they are given an opportunity to match what we put in the family charity box every week. They always put in part of their allowance, so I think their awareness of giving is present.”
On motherhood:
“I├óΓé¼Γäóm not a pushy mother in the day-to-day sense, but I would stop at nothing to do whatever I needed to do for the sake of my child. For me, motherhood is not about signing the check to get your kids into the best school; it├óΓé¼Γäós about giving them the freedom to be who they are.”
On the biggest misunderstanding about children with autism:
“That they are not capable of understanding anything, that they are completely locked in their own worlds and aren├óΓé¼Γäót├óΓé¼Γäó paying attention to anything around them or that they are disinterested. Even those closest to them sometimes believe that. And so often that proves not to be the case.”
Sounds like Kate is doing wonderful work for children around the world. She seems like such a down-to-earth mother who really, truly cares about not only her children, but other children, as well.
