Kids Found Living Alone In Bus While Parents While Their Parents Are In Prison

Two young children, ages 11 and 5, are now in the custody of child welfare authorities after they were found living ALONE in an abandoned school bus outside of Houston.
The family had been living in the bus in the forest since before their mom Sherrie Shorten (above) and her husband served jail time for embezzlement.
Sherrie explains that the hollowed out bus filled with beds was only meant to be the family’s home for a little while. She says:

“We moved from an apartment into the bus to conserve funds, but then we were arrested.”

No one noticed the parentless children because: A) the bus was in the forest, and B) neither of the children are enrolled in school.
The kids told authorities they were being “home-schooled.” Who was teaching the classes, you ask? Their mom (from jail)! Shorten told cops she continued teaching her daughter by mail from her jail cell:

“Every week I would mail her a new set of lessons and return the graded ones. We’d talk on the phone when she had questions. Last week she was having trouble understanding exponents.”

Somehow, despite her lessons the young children were not able to properly take care of themselves.
Shorten wants her kids to live with her when she gets out of jail in April, but CPS isn’t too sure that’s gonna happen.
