A lawsuit is being launched by the widow of a fallen NYPD officer, because she claims he committed suicide because his supervisor required him to have sex for a better work schedule!
If that’s true, it’s disgusting!
The Sgt. in question is Christine Hirtzel, who was Matthew Schindler‘s supervisor. Apparently she demanded that he give in to her sexual advances OR ELSE.
Here’s what the suit says:
“Schindler was made to understand that he would suffer tangible detriment in his job, job assignments, working conditions and future prospects if he did not submit to the sexual advances.”
UGH! What an awful position for ANYONE to be in!!
The suit even says that Schindler told Hirtzel he would kill himself if the advances didn’t stop!! Hirtzel decided to risk it, and refused to break off the inappropriate conduct. She even let him leave the stationhouse with his service weapon!
The sergeant then reported the suicide threat to a captain and confessed to an affair with the officer. The captain apparently tried “to rectify the hostile work environment and persuade him against suicide” by calling the officer. It was too late though, as Matthew shot himself in the head in his car on the Long Island Expressway on Feb. 13, 2012.
The wife and family (he left 3 kids behind) are seeking an unspecified amount.
What an awful, awful thing to have happened — and all because of a gross misuse of power by someone in an authority position. While not every case like this ends in tragedy, it still happens waaaay too often. Our hearts go out to this officer’s family and friends.
