We had hoped the death toll would remain low in the Washington Navy Yard shootings, but it turns out to be worse than we feared.
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier has officially confirmed that there have been 12 known fatalities at the hands of the shooter.
A number of other injuries have also been reported, including to police officers.
As we previously reported, one gunman has been killed, but police are on the lookout for two more possible shooters- a white male and a black male, both between the ages of 40 and 50.
The FBI is now leading that ongoing investigation.
No motive is yet known for the killings, but our hearts go out to the families of the dozen innocents we lost today.
