Here’s the thing: we TOTES get why Kraft has been petitioned to remove the artificial dyes from its boxes of mac & cheese, and we’re actually all for it!
There is a hint of sadness, however, as a lot of kids-turned-adults feel nostalgic for that bright yellow cheesy glow of the boxed staple!
It’s a good thing AND a sad thing! But mostly good!
Kraft has revamped its character-shaped product line for 2014, and they will have six more grams of whole grains, less sodium and saturated fat, and will use spices instead of artificial food dyes!
Which means they might appear to be slightly less yellow, but they’ll be trying to recreate the pasta’s famous yellow-orange color as close as possible!
Here’s what they said:
“Parents have told us that they would like fun Mac & Cheese varieties with the same great taste, but with improved nutrition.”
Specifically, they’re removing Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6 from boxes containing pasta shaped like SpongeBob SquarePants and those with Halloween and winter shapes, and Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and How to Train Your Dragon 2 will also be free of food coloring!
Though, there seems to be something a little weird about this announcement: do you notice what’s missing??
Kraft’s iconic elbow-shaped macaroni product! There’s been no word on why that is, yet!!
Yellow No. 5 has been linked to hyperactivity, asthma, some skin conditions and cancer, so why not the entire line of macaroni??
Still, we feel like this is great step — especially as the additives have already been banned widely overseas!
