This sounds like an action movie — but it’s not. It’s real life, and there was a real loss of life in defense of another. It doesn’t get much more serious than that.
Joseph Torrez, a 27-year-old MMA fighter, managed to take on 4 home intruders that even called to threaten him before showing up to his home in New Mexico. He hospitalized one, and killed one.
According to reports, suspect Leonard Calvillo uttered these chilling words to Joseph over the phone:
“I├óΓé¼Γäóll kill you and your family … I├óΓé¼Γäóll go to your house.”
Scary! And it wasn’t just the 22-year-old Calvillo who showed up. He also brought along Sal Garces, 25, his brother Raymond, 19, and Nathan Avalos, 20. They proceeded to break into the mobile home at about 2 a.m.
Joseph wasn’t alone either, but he didn’t have three dudes for backup either — his fiancee, son and another woman were there as well.
It was Sal Garces, according to reports, that didn’t make it out alive. He was stabbed to death in the fight, and Nathan Avalos left the scene with severe facial injuries. He’s still hospitalized.
The other two dudes? They ran. Scared.
They were easily picked up later, though, on conspiracy and property damage charges. Reports indicate that all four were gang members.
Joseph is a 155-pound lightweight who managed to fight off four attackers while his family was present, and he’s still not out of the woods. Not only was his home attacked, but he could face charges for Sal being stabbed to death, even though his lawyer can’t say enough that he was ‘fighting for his life.’
Luckily, they’ve already moved to a new home. We’d hate to hear that whatever gang these guys were in had retaliated, so that’s great news!
The latest news from Joseph’s attorney, C.J. McElhinney, says that Joseph is no longer cooperating with authorities and that it DOES seem like he’s at the “beginning of a very long fight” and might face charges even though he was protecting his family.
What a nightmare situation! We hope everything gets cleared up and quickly!
We wonder what he did to upset these guys, because we do hear it was part of an ongoing feud!
