Oh baby.
Wry Baby, an infant apparel company, came under fire last week for selling a onesie — and it’s really not hard to see why with it reading, “I Hate My Thighs.”
Body-shaming babies?
Michele Kort, senior editor at Ms. magazine put the onesie on blast in one of her recent blog posts, writing:
“Yes, we know├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥it’s meant to be funny. After all, the company that sells this onesie with the saying “I Hate My Thighs” is named Wry Baby. And we feminists do have a sense of humor. But really, there’s something icky about projecting fat awareness on babies.”
She’s not the only one! After her post, Wry Baby responded, saying:
“We couldn’t agree more about body image. That’s why we made a ridiculous joke about it. Obviously no baby would or should hate their thighs!”
And they decided to let shoppers decide which they liked more, sweetness vs. irony, depending on which had more sales!
An in the end, sweetness won, replacing the now famous purple onesie with a red snapsuit emblazoned with “Love Me For My Leg Rolls.”
