A word of advice to Elle Canada — people don’t like it when you dub their traditional clothing a “new trend.”
The publication has faced major backlash and Internet anger for a fashion piece on their site that refers to a dashiki, a traditional West African garment, as the “newest It-item.”

The piece, called “Is The Dashiki The New Kaftan?“, features images of various celebrities, including Rihanna, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Shay Mitchell (above) wearing a dashiki with accompanying captions.
An image was also posted on Elle Canada’s Instagram but then quickly deleted.
Readers have also been quick to post their anger and disappointment at the magazine. Here are some of people’s reactions on Twitter:

1)it’s been around forever the dashiki isn’t new 2) let’s not encourage cultural appropriation https://t.co/yLuW0I2Hi8

We hope Elle Canada issues an apology and learns from their mistake.
Stuff like this has been going on for far too long!
Enough already!!!
