Alex Trebek Honors Jeopardy Champion Who Died Of Cancer Before Her 6-Episode Winning Streak Aired -- Watch!

Gone but not forgotten.
This week, Jeopardy fans bid farewell to Cindy Stowell, the contestant suffering from terminal cancer who died one week before her episode aired.
Or should we say episodes? That’s right, it turns out Stowell was a six-day champ!

After her six-game winning streak ended on Wednesday, host Alex Trebek paid tribute to the 41-year-old champion, saying:

“Appearing on the show was the fulfillment of a lifelong ambition for [Cindy.] What you did not know is that when we taped these programs with her a few weeks ago, she was suffering from Stage IV cancer and sadly, on Dec. 5, Cindy Stowell passed away. So from all of us here at Jeopardy!, our sincere condolences to her family and her friends.”

During her six appearances, the Arizona native won a total of $105,803, which she vowed to donate to cancer research.
On Wednesday, her boyfriend Jason Hess sent his congratulations to Sam Scovill, the contestant who ended Stowell’s winning streak. He shared on Twitter:

Cindy’s biggest fear going in was that she would get caught on minor pronunciation errors. Was clean to this point, but 2x today. Uh oh…

Scovill thanked Hess in his response, tweeting:

I’d like to give thanks to @habcous for his graciousness during a very difficult time. Can’t put into words how great of a person he is.

Hess had previously revealed Stowell was on painkillers while taping her episodes, during which she was fighting a high-grade fever and blood infection from her Stage IV cancer.
Stowell, who passed away on December 5, marks the first contestant with a posthumous airing in the show’s history. Her family asks that donations be made to the Cancer Research Institute in Cindy’s name.
