One day, Ed Sheeran‘s popularity will be consumed by a rival newcomer.
It’s the sad, inevitable cycle of the music industry that the Shape Of You performer’s is well prepared for, thanks to some blunt honesty from his close friend and mentor, Elton John.

Speaking on George Ezra‘s podcast, Elton revealed that he had discussed the longevity of Ed’s career with the musician, telling him:

“You have a heyday and you have a rest, and the heyday can never be replaced.”

Drawing from the ups and downs of his own career, the Rocket Man crooner explained:

“After that I had the common sense to know I’m not going to have a No.1 every time straight away. I knew someone else would take over. It’s cyclical.”

While Ed’s last two albums have been smash hits, his older and wiser mentor told him that wouldn’t always be the case. Elton continued:

“Ed will go through that and I’ve talked to him about it. I’ve said, ├óΓé¼╦£There’ll come a time where this won’t happen every time and you have to accept that.'”

Sure, every artist has a flop eventually — but the way Elton sees it, Ed’s successful albums shouldn’t even be that well-received either:

“On the (American radio) chart, which is the middle-of-the-road chart, Ed is still No.1 and Shape Of You is still in the chart. It’s like, ├óΓé¼╦£Why?’ How many times do you want to listen to these things?”

Okay, now he’s starting to come off less like a mentor and more like a hater.
Luckily for Ed, his popularity isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. For that, he should be thankful Shawn Mendes isn’t a redhead!
