We think that’s a good idea right now.
Nike will be launching their new line of golf clubs this month, but Tiger Woods will not help with the promotion for obvious reasons.
The clubs, Victory Red STR8-FIT Tour fairway woods, will go on sale January 28 for $299. Nike’s selling point is that they were designed by all 13 golf pros who promote Nike products and that Lucas Glover tested them last year at the U.S. Open Championship leading to a win for the lesser-known golfer.
Nike relied a lot on Woods for his promotional value as the brand was not a major player in the golf world before their endorsement deal with Tiger began in 1996. But they’re hoping that the clubs will sell well despite the lack of Tiger. CEO Mark Parker explains:
“We feel very good about how we are managing our golf business through this period and our position in the broader golf market. We’ll continue to support Tiger and his family as we, of course, look forward to his return.”
Really?
Maybe it’s time to seek out a new famous face to associate with the brand?
What about Michelle Wie who won her first professional tournament last year at 20 years old and has been hailed as the potential female version of Tiger Woods…minus all the skanks!
