She asks:
Hey Amy. I really enjoy your tips and videos. Thanks for sharing your insights on Motherhood. My son just turned six months old. Do you have any safety tips for this age?
Amy says:
Hi Carmen. I appreciate the kind words and thanks for being a loyal Perezitos fan. My son is just a little older than yours and so I will share my observations of what you need to do to make sure your little guy is safe at this age.
At about six months old (now remember, every baby grows and develops at his/her own pace, so this will not apply to everyone’s baby) babies tend to start grabbing for everything in sight. While this is adorable, it can also be dangerous if you’re not monitoring your little one. Babies also start to put anything and everything in their mouths at this age too. Be very careful to ensure that your baby doesn’t get a hold of something that he/she can choke on. That means small items like coins, pieces of food, figurines, cotton balls etc.
Every year emergency room physicians report the most bizarre household items that they have had to remove from little ones’ noses, ears and tummies. Make sure when your cutie is sitting at the dinner table to put everything out of his/her reach. This means silverware, glasses, food, etc. Your baby will try to get a hold of everything in sight.
This is also a good time to lower your baby’s crib mattress. Your child most likely is really moving around now in his/her crib and might even have the strength to pull him/herself up. Lowering the crib mattress will help will make sure your baby can’t get out and won’t get hurt. At this age, your baby is also rolling around and so unlike when your child was a newborn until about 4 months old and would lay still wherever you out him/her, your baby is now becoming active. This means, do not leave your child unattended. If you let your baby hang out in your bed during the day, do not leave your cutie alone, as at this age, they can roll right off and get hurt.
Finally, now is a good time to baby proof your home. If you have a coffee table for example, get foam covers for the edges to protect your cutie for crawling or walking into sharp edges. Use electrical outlet covers to avoid your little one getting shocked. Put baby proof locks on your kitchen sink cabinets to keep your child from getting a hold of toxic cleaners, or even better, move all household cleaning products to a shelf that is high enough that it is out of your child’s reach. Keep your li’l angel safe and protected with these helpful child safety tips.
So much great information! Very, very helpful
