As one of the music industry’s top executives, there’s no doubt L.A. Reid had a close relationship with Prince.
As you’re aware, the music icon was found dead in his Minnesota estate on Thursday morning. Although the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed, his reps maintain Prince was suffering from the flu. Other reports claim a potential drug overdose triggered his untimely passing. An autopsy is set to be conducted today.
The 59-year-old producer appeared on the Today show on Friday morning to mourn the loss of his beloved friend and collaborator.

Reid told Savannah Guthrie and Matt Lauer that he is deeply shocked by the news — especially considering how healthy he had known the Purple Rain singer to be:
“The thing that really bothers me about it is the Prince I know was, like, super healthy. Vegan, wasn’t an abuser of drugs, wasn’t an abuser of alcohol, you know. He lived right, and he was clean. He looked young, he looked really healthy and vibrant. So the whole thing is really mysterious to me.”
That is very strange!
He continued by remembering his talented friend:
“I’m still in shock. I spent the day yesterday just listening to Prince, and for whatever reason, it sounded even better. What a great guy. ├óΓé¼┬ª I’ve always said it: the greatest at everything ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ playing, writing, composing, fashion, everything. [He had] the masculinity of Teddy Pendergrass, but he could take your girl [while] wearing high heels.”
Dressed fittingly in purple, the former X Factor judge continued by giving some insight as to what the multi-instrumentalist was like behind closed doors. And apparently, he was quite the talker!
Reid shared:
“Oh, he could go. He was a business genius as much as a musical genius.”
But it was Prince’s ability to be a one-man show that really impressed Reid:
“That’s the most difficult thing. That means you’re playing them one at a time. So that means he’ll put his drum track down first, and he’s playing an entire song while he’s hearing it in his head, then come back and lay the bass, then come back and lay the piano, and then lay the guitars. ├óΓé¼┬ª It’s impossible. No one can do this.”
Prince was definitely one of the world’s all-time greatest — and he will be sorely missed.
