Australian ABC had reportedly committed around $600,000 to BBC’s six-part series, Top of the Lake.
But when Elizabeth Moss was cast as the lead role in the about series — about Australian detective investigating the disappearance of a 12-year-old pregnant daughter of a local drug lord — they pulled their cash out!
Why? Do they hate Mad Men? Are they mad at Moss for divorcing SNL star Fred Armisen?
A spokesman for the national network explained their reasoning:
“We went into this with the understanding the lead actor would be an Australian. But when that could not happen, we removed ourselves from the deal.
We love Elisabeth Moss, but she’s not an Australian. We have a fine calibre of Australian actors available and we would have preferred to see one of them in the role.”
You hear that Elizabeth? It’s not you, it’s your your accent.
There’s no need for the producers to recast. The six part series will get the missing funding from UKTV; it’s also backed by money from Screen Australia, and is being co-produced by the US Sundance Channel.
