Considering the first Avatar was in development since 1994 and originally supposed to be produced after Titanic was released in 1997, we’re not shocked that the second won’t be ready by 2014. Or even 2015, for that matter.
While sitting down for an interview about the release of Titanic 3D, producer Jon Landau was inevitably asked about the progress on the sequels to the highest grossing movie of all time and here is what he said:
“We’re not naming dates, but I think 2014 will be a tough date for us to make. For us, it’s about getting it right. Titanic was supposed to be a summer movie; it was a December movie. The first Avatar was supposed to be 2008; it was 2009. Movies make release dates; release dates don’t make movies. We’re going to get it right.”
Basically, don’t trust any release date that IMD
b gives you. Wait until you see it stamped on a poster to believe it.
The good news, however, is that they have finally begun production! “We’ve started it already,” Landau declared and continued to explain that an eco-friendly facility is already up and running.
Since part of what made the first film so great is the rich digital environment, the production team is busy building it and working on the challenges that come with capturing the motions of actors in an underwater environment.
In case you haven’t heard, the sequel will dive into Pandora’s deep oceans, as the producer explained:
“The underwater thing — to put it into perspective — I believe that the best way to look at it is it’s going to be like the floating mountains in the first movie. It’s not going to be all underwater. It’s going to be a place that we go to, come out of, go back to; that type of thing.”
Sounds pretty cool! And for the sake of fans who enjoyed the first one, we think it’s better that James Cameron takes his time and delivers a quality film that will top the original, so we’re not worried about the release date.
