LEAVE BRITNEY MINNIE ALONE!
That’s what blogger and dancer Ragen Chastain demands in a petition intended for Barneys‘ display communications manager, Rick Barroso.
The catalyst was the swanky department store’s model makeover they gave to Minnie Mouse for their Disney-themed Electric Holiday windows.
Rather than featuring the polka dot dress-wearing rodent we all know and love, Minnie was transformed into a 5’11, size 0 mouse so she could “look good” in a Lanvin dress.
Chastain was horrified to see Minnie’s new look and wants Barneys to change her back to normal because it’s sending the wrong message to young girls.
On her petition she writes:
“There is nothing wrong with tall thin women. There is something wrong with changing a beloved children├óΓé¼Γäós character├óΓé¼Γäós body so that it looks good in a dress that almost nobody looks good in – adding to the tremendous pressure on young girls and women to attain photoshop perfection. The problem isn├óΓé¼Γäót with Minnie├óΓé¼Γäós body, it├óΓé¼Γäós with a dress that only looks good on a woman who is 5├óΓé¼Γäó11 and a size zero.
That little girl who is going to become a 5├óΓé¼Γäó4, size 12 woman can├óΓé¼Γäót just become a 5├óΓé¼Γäó11, size 0 woman when she wants to fit into a dress that was designed by someone who couldn’t be bothered to make a dress that looks good on someone who is not a model.
Girls have enough pressure to be thin, now the beloved Disney mouse of their childhood has to add to the message that the only good body is a tall, size 0 body? Enough already. Let├óΓé¼Γäós give girls a chance to celebrate the actual bodies they have instead hating them for not fitting into a Lanvin dress. Then maybe enough girls will get together and demand dresses that look good on their actual, non-digitally altered bodies and designers will just have to become talented enough to design a dress that looks good on them.”
