Blog Dramma!
The New York Times is suing AOL Inc to force its Huffington Post online news website to rename a parenting blog with a similar name to its own.
IThe Times is saying Huffington Post’s “Parentlode” blog had caused reader confusion with the newspaper’s 3-year-old “Motherlode” blog. We thought this was kinda of petty until we got the full scoop.
“Parentlode” was started less than a month ago by a Lisa Belkin (pictured above) – the same woman who used to run the NY Times site.
In her first blog post for Huffington, Lisa actually dissed the her old site’s name claiming Motherlode does not fit “in an era when fathers are every bit the parent.” Adding that her new blog “regularly champions equality, and new paradigms.” Burn!
NY Times says Lisa chose the “lode” name to confuse her readers. It said it asked Huffington Post Editor in Chief Arianna Huffington to change the name of the new blog to “something more original,” but that the online newspaper declined.
The Times sued AOL for trademark infringement, unfair competition and deceptive trade practices. It also wants AOL to abandon its trademark application for the Parentlode name, which they should do willingly.
In our opinion “Parentlode” doesn’t really make sense – at least “Motherlode” is an existing phrase. BUT, who are we to judge? Our Perezitos isn’t even English! LOL.
