The BJOG obstetrics journal is reporting that women with larger waistlines pre-pregnancy will likely deliver larger babies (those weighing over 8lbs).
According to the study, the placement of extra body fat — not the body’s overall percentage — could be the main contributor to birthing a macrosomic newborn.
Senior Researcher Dr. Gordon C.S. Smith states:
We know that total body fat is associated with pregnancy outcome. This study suggests that the distribution of the body fat may also be important.
Experts recommend hopeful mommies-to-be to maintain a healthy body sans visceral fat before and during the pregnancy. No dieting during those nine months! Just lots of healthy eats and moderate walking.
