Finding a work-life balance in Hollywood can be tough. Take it from Bill Hader, who straight up cried in a recent interview with Variety when he started thinking about how little he’s seen his daughters since his HBO series Barry took off.

Looking back on how his career impacted his personal life, the 40-year-old actor admitted that the demands of being in showbiz had put a strain on his 12-year marriage to filmmaker Maggie Carey since his days on Saturday Night Live. He recalled:

“When I was on SNL, I was a bit of a basket case. It could not have been easy on my wife at the time. I was so consumed with work and anxiety.”

The Emmy winner said he suffered panic attacks and migraines during his stint on SNL, but it wasn’t until after the birth of their second child in 2012 that he decided to leave the NBC series:

“It was hard with one kid, let alone two. Because I was just never around.”

Hader and Carey had another daughter in 2014, then went on to file for divorce in December 2017. While the comedian says the two are now “friends,” he confesses his work still gets in the way of his fatherly duties.
While reflecting on his busy 2018, which saw him wrapping up the first season of Barry, shooting It: Chapter Two, and starting to write Barry’s second season, the comic grew emotional over how little he got to see his family. He lamented:

“I think I saw my kids a total of five days all summer. It was terrible. So, I’m going, ‘Next summer I’m taking off. And I’m going to spend every day with them.’ It’s this weird thing where when you’re in this industry, you don’t have time to be with them, and it’s really, really difficult. I’m getting emotional right now talking about it.”

He later quipped:

“Congrats. It’s the first interview I’ve ever cried in.”

Hopefully, if all goes to plan for the prolific creative, it will be the last.
After Barry’s second season wraps production, Hader plans to spend the summer writing a script for a film he hopes to direct — a project that, he believes, will allow him to work from home and make up for lost time. He added:

“They can see me all day if they want. They can really get sick of me.”

That’s all a dad can ask for.
