It wasn’t quite as good as industry experts were expecting, but Warner Bros.‘ The Lego Batman Movie did its thing this Valentine’s Day weekend with an opening of $55.6 million from more than 4,000 theaters.
That edged out the erotic Fifty Shades Darker in a vicious Valentine’s battle, and it was a big win for Warner Bros. considering The Lego Batman Movie is now the top opening of 2017!

It’s not all good for the lego flick, though — this was something of a down weekend at the box office as that film was expected to sit between $60 and $70 million, and obviously fell short.
But Fifty Shades Darker, though it may have came in second place on the weekend, actually outpaced its own projections by doing $46.8 million from about 3,700 theaters — a total more than $7 million above what pre-weekend tracking had suggested for the S&M-filled flick.
But big picture, each of those movies lagged badly when compared to the previous installments in their respective franchises. Hey, sequels aren’t always a sure-fire slam dunk!
Beyond those two new releases, too, there’s some big news both domestically and abroad. In China, Paramount‘s xXx: The Return of Xander Cage absolutely blew up — bringing in a whopping $61.3 million in its Chinese debut!!
That gives it a global haul of $229.6 million so far. Not too shabby, especially with that truly massive Chinese audience!

Beyond that, and more domestically focused, John Wick: Chapter 2 — this weekend’s other big new release — came in a little better than its more modest expectations, pulling down $30 million from 3,100 theaters across the country.
That’s more than double the debut of the original flick in its series — and clearly a good win for Lionsgate!
