A young woman in Brazil tragically lost her life over the weekend after what authorities and witnesses say was a devastating safety failure during a bungee jumping excursion. And adding another heartbreaking layer to an already horrific incident, the terrifying moment was captured on video by bystanders who were watching the jump unfold.
According to multiple media reports from Brazil, 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas had signed up for what was supposed to be an adrenaline-filled adventure at the Ponte do Esqueleto, also known as Skeleton Bridge, in Limeira, São Paulo. Instead, the outing ended in unimaginable tragedy.

Per multiple Brazilian news outlets, witnesses say Maria Eduarda was escorted toward the edge of the bridge by bungee jumping company staff members before being thrown over the side. But almost immediately, something appeared to be terribly wrong: footage circulating on social media allegedly shows onlookers realizing that the safety rope had been left behind rather than attached to the young woman before the jump.
Seriously.
One witness filming the event reportedly pointed toward the rope still lying on the ground and shouted in alarm as the reality of the situation became clear.
You can see some of the videos taken from the scene (below), but please note that they are very VERY disturbing:
Authorities say Maria Eduarda fell approximately 40 meters, or about 131 feet. Emergency responders, including a police helicopter, were dispatched to the scene, but she was sadly pronounced dead there.
The loss has sent shockwaves through the community and among those who knew her. Maria Eduarda had just graduated in physical education and sports management and had reportedly purchased a guided tour package that included the jump from the abandoned bridge — but what was intended as a celebration has now turned tragic.

The legal fallout is already underway. Per The Mirror and others, authorities have confirmed that six people were questioned in connection with the incident. Three men were reportedly arrested at the scene and charged with homicide with implied malice.
Investigators are examining whether the operation was being conducted properly and whether safety procedures were followed. One investigator, Delegate Andrea Dantas Levy, offered a blunt assessment of the situation to Brazilian media outlets:
“It was a team there that wasn’t regulated; they didn’t even have authorization to be there. They ended up organizing this event, and this fatality happened today, in my perception, due to a failure to verify and supervise the placement of the rope on the victim’s jump.”
Meanwhile, local officials are also demanding answers. Limeira’s City Council is reportedly pursuing action following the tragedy, while Mayor Murilo Félix criticized what he described as longstanding safety concerns surrounding the area.
As he stated:
“It is necessary to determine responsibility for the lack of access control to a federal area that has presented known risks for years and still lacks the necessary protection measures.”
At this point, Brazil’s Civil Police continue to investigate exactly what happened and who may ultimately be held responsible, per People.
Our hearts go out to everyone mourning Maria Eduarda during this incredibly painful time.
