We can’t even imagine getting a phone call like this!
A 911 dispatcher in Marysville, California named Britney Melchor was training a new employee when a call came in about an emergency situation regarding an infant.
The caller said:
├óΓé¼┼ôI have a one-year-old infant, swallowed something and he├óΓé¼Γäós starting to choke on it.”
When the caller listed his address so help could go out that way – Britney Melchor immediately recognized it. She said:
“├óΓé¼┼ôI heard him say an address and I perked up and then I heard him say it again and I recognized that as my own home address.”
It turned out that the choking 1-year-old infant was her own son!
In a situation like that, most people would panic. But Britney Melchor played it cool, and she did that by following her instincts!
She said:
“My first reaction was getting help to him right away. Just like any other 911 phone call I├óΓé¼Γäóve ever had, my first instinct is to do my job and help save that life.”
But what happened to her son in the first place? Well, her fiancé Robert Kimball later realized that their 14-month-old son Maverick had swallowed a metal washer that had dropped off a piece of furniture.
Luckily, Robert Kimball didn’t need to wait before the ambulance to arrive before he figured out what to do. He said:
“[Maverick] went completely limp, wasn’t breathing. At that point I made the decision to take my middle finger and shove the object past his airway.”
Just as he got his son breathing again, the ambulance arrived and brought the baby to the hospital where x-rays confirmed the foreign object that Maverick had swallowed.
Maverick is doing just fine, and bosses are impressed with their employee!
Dep. Chief Aaron Easton said:
├óΓé¼┼ôIt├óΓé¼Γäós an extremely hard job├óΓé¼┬ªAnd then to have to deal with hearing about her own child being in peril. Just the amount of composure, professionalism and poise, it really stood out.”
What an amazing story!
And also a story that proves how valuable a skill it is when one can stay cool and collected under pressure!
