This is a great idea!
Within the California State Prison at Sacramento, inmates harvest vegetables grown on prison grounds. These vegetables are given to the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary, for the rescued animals that live there. About 600 pounds of vegetables have been raised and donated to the animal sanctuary so far.
Some of the donated produce includes sunflowers, zucchini, spaghetti squash, acorn squash, honey boat squash and a variety of peppers.
Ultimately, the animals being fed by the program are healthier due to the fact that they don’t eat the usual processed animal food. The sanctuary also saves money by not having to order food.
In its own way, the program also benefits the inmates. They are able to get physical exercise, care for something (the plants), and practice their job development skills, which may lead to employment once they are released.
We love this idea! It’s great to see one idea utilize something which usually is seen in a negative light and transform it into something pure and good!
