Cameron Mathison is asking for prayers and positive thoughts as he battles kidney cancer.
This week, the Hallmark Channel host revealed he was recently diagnosed with the disease medically known as renal cell carcinoma, after experiencing some problems with his gut and undergoing an MRI.

The 50-year-old star announced the diagnosis on his show, Home and Family, and later opened up about the sad news to his Instagram followers on Tuesday. Mathison began his message by asking his social media community for help, writing:
“I have a health situation that I want to share with you all?? There are many reasons I love social media, staying connected with you all, sharing fun experiences… well this time I’m asking for your help.”
The former All My Children actor continued:
“About a month ago, I had an MRI for some gut issues I’ve been having, and during that MRI they found a tumor on my right kidney. It’s consistent with Renal Cell Carcinoma … or kidney cancer. The good news is that it hasn’t spread to any other organs??”
The TV host explained he especially fortunate in this case, as doctors claim his active and healthy lifestyle kept the potentially fatal illness from spreading to other parts of his body.
“They say my healthy lifestyle and diet has no doubt helped keep it from growing and spreading to other areas, as doctors think it’s been growing in me for minimum 10 years??. I am extremely lucky that we found it early.”
The Ryan Lavery portrayer ended his open letter with gratitude for the support he’s received from family, friends, doctors, and colleagues. Mathison also shared details about his upcoming surgery scheduled later this week:
“Thank you to my longtime friend and urologist @jon_giddens who has helped me tremendously through this process.Vanessa, Lucas and Leila have been absolutely amazing with their love and support… as have my mom, dad, brother, and everyone at Home and Family, Hallmark, and ET❤️ My surgery is scheduled on September 12th, I was hoping to receive positive thoughts, prayers, or whatever you feel comfortable with, on 9/12 (my surgery is at 1pm PST) ?? I announced this on @homeandfamilytv yesterday, and wanted to make sure I posted about it here as well. Feeling very grateful and optimistic!! ????❤️#thankyou yes
Shortly after his confessional posted, fans and celebrities alike left supportive words of encouragement in the comments section, including Candace Cameron Bure, Ali Sweeney and All My Children alum Lacey Chabert.
We’ll go ahead and throw our own name into the mix as we offer our thoughts and prayers to the Mathison family during this difficult time. While this is undoubtedly very sad news, it’s actually incredible to hear how the thespian’s personal way of life served as a buffer between a very serious scenario.
Echoing Cameron’s original sentiments, we hope his story can inspire us all to get regular check-ups and see a doctor at the first sign of abnormal physical changes. According to the National Cancer Institute, people who suffer from renal cell cancer show signs of blood in the urine, a lump in their abdomen, loss of appetite, random weight loss, anemia, or pain in their back or side, as Mathison did.
