Not a bad idea, if it means people can keep their jobs.
In the last few weeks, ABC News has made 25 percent staff cuts that cost nearly 400 people their jobs. Looking to avoid the same fate, CBS is eyeing a deal with CNN that would bring their two networks together and hopefully, save their employees.
By combining their resources, the two networks would save a ton of money. For example, if they joined forces, they could both dip into the others news footage as well as share expensive equipment.
Furthermore, both networks are about to lose key anchors this year. Katie Couric’s contract is almost expired and CBS can in no way afford her $15 million a year paycheck, while Anderson Cooper is also nearing the end of his deal with CNN, who probably faces the same issue.
Pool your funds, pool your personnel — a win, win for everyone.
And the best part of the merger would be that the networks wouldn’t need any government approval, so as soon as they are ready, they can move right into it.
However, don’t expect an official announcement any time soon. There are still some major issues to be hammered out, like unions and such.
But it does sound like a great idea. Like we said, anything to save some people from the unemployment line.
