Hi Lisa!
I have a question about nutrition for building muscle, and about what foods, protein shakes, and meal replacements are useful for this goal. I know that many protein shakes and meal replacements are not healthy because they are full of bad sugars or fats, and I wanted to know if Lisa DeFazio could give us any tips on this? Taste isn’t as big a concern for many people who really do want to take health and fitness to the next level, so excluding the taste factor, does Lisa know of the best protein shakes, bars, and meal replacements that don’t taste as well, but are the healthiest on the market, for the goal of building muscle?
I also wanted to know about water. I have heard that healthy kidneys can process up to 32 ounces of water or liquid per hour. Does this mean that a person can maximize health if he or she were to drink 16 ounces ( 2 cups ) of water per hour? I know that drinking more than 32 ounces of water in one hour is bad for you, but what if you were to drink 8 ounces of water every hour, for 12 hours everyday?
And lastly, I have heard that using a blender to make protein shakes (or any other shake) can cause oxidation, which reduces some nutrients. Does this mean that if I were to make a protein shake, store it in a container in the fridge, then drink it the next day or two days later, it would have less protein, nutrients, or health?
I sincerely hope these questions can be answered, since they are very, very difficult to search online. Thanks very much in advance!!
Sincerely,
Jon V.
Hi Jon!
I have lots of ideas. Yes, many protein powders are loaded with sugar. I have tried many powders and my favorite is by Smoothie King. It is the Gladiator meal replacement. It is so high in protein (45 grams protein per serving!) and low carb (1gram). It tastes delicious, and it blends well without the powder residue. It comes in Vanilla (my favorite), chocolate, and strawberry. As an added bonus it contains loads of amino acids, vitamins and minerals. There are various locations, check out www.smoothieking.com
Regarding bars, I like Promax and Balance bars, as they are high in protein and taste great! You should also calculate your exact protein needs based on your weight, age and health goals. It is very individualized, and you should see a Registered Dietitian for that specific information. You can contact me at www.thedietsquad.com
There are various recommendations for water! If you consume more protein, you need more water to help process and flush it out of your system. Spreading out the water consumption throughout the day is a great idea! I would not worry about the oxidation issue! Whenever possible, make it fresh and drink it, but if you have to make it in advance, it is still a healthy choice.
Keep up the good work.
