This number should be DECREASING, not increasing.
Over 1.6 million children don’t have a home in the U.S., which means at least 1 out 45 kids calls a homeless shelter, a motel, or staying with other families their home. This is a rise by 33% in just three years!!!
That’s really, really sad.
In fact, it’s completely unacceptable.
Ellen Bassuk President of the National Center on Family Homelessness says:
“This is an absurdly high number. What we have new in 2010 is the effects of a man-made disaster caused by the economic recession. ├óΓé¼┬ª We are seeing extreme budget cuts, foreclosures and a lack of affordable housing.”
Southern states such as Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas are some of the worst states for homeless children.
The best states include Vermont, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Maine.
Many homeless shelters are at their maximum and can hardly hold anymore people. With recession numbers growing, so do the homelessness numbers.
We need to change this. We cannot have our children be without homes and feeling unsafe. There needs to be a change!!
