China Fearing Deadly Pneumonic Plague Outbreak After Two Cases Found In The Country!

China fears plague outbreak

Chinese citizens are gravely concerned about a potential pneumonic plague outbreak after two natives (not pictured) were diagnosed with the highly contagious and deadly disease.

CNN reports that government officials said the two patients came from Inner Mongolia and were transported to Beijing, where they are currently being treated in a hospital in the city’s Chaoyang District.

On Wednesday, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said there is an “extremely low risk” of the plague spreading a la the Black Death epidemic in the 14th century, but that did little to quell citizens’ concerns.

According to The Wall Street Journal, China’s CDC said in a statement that they moved the two patients into quarantine and launched a probe to find others who may have been exposed to the disease. Those who were thought to be possibly infected were medicated, the outlet said.

For those who need a refresher on plagues, the pneumonic plague is said to be the deadlier of the three types. The bubonic plague is the most common, with typically around a dozen cases in the US each year. If left untreated, it can move into the blood and cause septicemic plague, or to the lungs and cause pneumonic plague.

The pneumonic plague is passed from person to person through the air, or from animals like rodents, the US CDC says. Those infected experience high fever, trouble breathing, and cough up bloody mucus. Per National Geographic, pneumonic and septicemic plague kills almost 100 percent of those it infects if left untreated — which is why the CDC says it’s “essential” to treat plague patients early with a course of antibiotics.

One of the doctors who treated the two recent plague patients posted about what she saw on China’s social media platform WeChat. In her since-deleted post, Dr. Li Jifeng revealed a middle-aged man and his wife came in to the Beijing hospital on November 3 having breathing problems and a fever.

She wrote, according to the Times:

“After so many years of specialist training, I’m familiar with the diagnosis and treatment of most respiratory diseases. But this time, I looked and looked at it. I couldn’t guess what pathogen caused this pneumonia. I only knew it was rare.”

Yikes.

While the government is taking all the necessary steps to prevent an outbreak, citizens have still expressed concerns over how long officials waited to share the news, and how the two patients were transported from Mongolia to Beijing.

Stay safe out there, Perezcious readers.
