Say it ain’t so, Chipotle! SAY IT AIN’T SO!!!!
The popular Mexican food chain dropped a devastating bombshell on food lovers everywhere when they released a statement saying climate changes could start to affect the prices and availability of some of their ingredients!
So what does this mean exactly?? It means the changes in weather could eventually prevent you from getting guacamole in your burrito!!
In their annual report, Chipotle writes:
“Increasing weather volatility or other long-term changes in global weather patterns, including any changes associated with global climate change, could have a significant impact on the price or availability of some of our ingredients. Any increase in the prices of the ingredients most critical to our menu, such as chicken, beef, cheese, avocados, beans, rice, tomatoes and pork, would adversely affect our operating results. Alternatively, in the event of cost increases with respect to one or more of our raw ingredients, we may choose to temporarily suspend serving menu items, such as guacamole or one or more of our salsas, rather than paying the increased cost for the ingredients. Any such changes to our available menu may negatively impact our restaurant traffic and comparable restaurant sales, and could also have an adverse impact on our brand.”
Now for those of you who are asking, “How many avocados to they really need?”, Chipotle uses 97,000 pounds of avocado per day, which comes out to a whopping 35.4 million pounds every year!! That’s a lot of guac!
Weather plays a HUGE factor in the equation as scientist predict avocado production in California alone can drop by 40% over the next 32 years due to hotter temperatures and drier conditions.
Anyone who has known the delicious bliss that is Chipotle guacamole knows this has the potential to be one of the biggest disasters in fast food history!
Please, take the McRib. But don’t take away our guacamole!!!
