Twitter went into a frenzy on Wednesday after Chrissy Teigen revealed that she chose the sex of her unborn baby during her IVF treatments.
Fortunately, the 30-year-old recognized that most of the confusion was coming from ignorance — so John Legend‘s wife took the time to explain the process to fans!
As a preface, picking the baby’s gender is medically possible through preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) or preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) — which is offered during IVF treatment and is found by some to be controversial.

It all started when one commenter said in a now-deleted tweet:
“Did you choose the hair and the eye color too @chrissyteigen….smh messing with the natural blessings from God. I liked you a lot.”
To which Miz Teigen responded:
my natural blessing from god was infertility. https://t.co/OtGJkZ0nA9

Thank you, try again!
The supermodel continued:
What year is this!? And for the record, I am always happy and open to speak on infertility. The more casual, the better! I don’t mind.

I also picked the embryo with a taste for bacon, a knack for magic and size 7 feet so she can always find shoes

LOL! Leave it to her to throw a few punches.
When Twitterland got curious about the process, Teigen took them to school:
@JQFrench you make an embryo (outside) from a sperm/egg (fertilization) then it goes back in me and hopefully “takes” aka I get pregnant.
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 24, 2016
@JQFrench you kind of just cut out the part where the sperm has to swim to the egg and fertilize it. it’s all done with a little help by man

@TravisSpates they tell you “hey, we were able to make 10 embryos. 6 girls, 4 boys. would you like to choose what goes in or do at random?”
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 24, 2016
what is that difference though? i’ve already created embryos with a doctor. only after must it be random? https://t.co/hyIwy3P1Oy

This is all so interesting. I said it so casually because i’m just open. I’m around so many open-minded people & forgot it’s controversial.
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 24, 2016
anyhow I am not mad at anyone’s beliefs but I don’t really actively seek out people to make them feel bad about their decisions either.

so many typos, my apologies. pretty under the weather. probably this darn science baby.
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 24, 2016
@one1man_WOLFpak nope it’s still all us! we just had trouble with the timing and needed some help making the two meet. (tmi?? yes)
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 24, 2016
@maddiexroarr @saltshul just one at a time. i think if i were older I would have done 2 or 3 at a time but I was confident it would work.
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 24, 2016
@DollaDollaBail @saltshul they’re frozen for whenever we are ready to try again! same odds of taking as if they weren’t frozen.
